I’ve been trying for the past couple of weeks to figure out if I still remember how to relax. The word relax is foreign to me and it has been for the past couple of years.

Since my husband was diagnosed with Chiari Malformation in September of 2015 I have been on the go. We found out about his condition on a Monday. We had the MRI and other scans on Tuesday. Then returned to the doctor on Wednesday for results and showed up for pre-op on Friday. His surgery was the following Tuesday.

That was a lot to digest in a short amount of time and we have not had a chance to breathe since that day. I have forgotten how to take time for myself to recuperate and rest. I have been on edge for a couple of years and now it is time for me to relax and unwind.

If you remember my post about living and existing, you know that I feel that life is moving too fast around me. I have outlined a few things that I will incorporate in my life to help me slow down, relax, and unwind.

1. Listen to Music

I am a music lover and I haven’t had a chance to just sit down and enjoy music for a while. This will be so refreshing to me. I love to listen to music from the 90’s and early 2000’s.

Getting lost in the rhythm and words of a good song makes me feel like I am in another world. I plan to find my favorite songs on Prime Music and just listen until my heart is content.

2. Sit in Silence

This one is a bit difficult for me. I do NOT like being left alone to my own thoughts at all. I always have background noise going on to distract me. Now, it is time for me to attempt to search within myself and see

Now, it is time to attempt to search within myself and see what is really going on. I think that this will be a great challenge.

It will help me to stay grounded if I can just sit in silence for a moment to think about my goals, things that I can work on, and also pray. I am looking forward to finding the best way to be alone in silence and learn things about myself.

3. Catch up on Shows

Since I am busy most of the time, I have not been able to watch a lot of TV. I do have the TV on in the background while I am cooking or cleaning, but I rarely get to sit down and enjoy a show without being distracted.

My current plan is to catch up on episodes of Homeland. I am in season three and it is a really good show. When I finish that show, I will find another series to watch in my free time.

4. Read a Book

This will be my favorite way to relax because reading is my favorite hobby. I will probably choose to read more than any of the other options listed. My favorite genre of books to read is crime, mystery, and thrillers.

The book that I started reading around this time last year is The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty. This will be the first book on the list.

It was getting really good, but I didn’t have time to finish it before life got hectic. We also went to a book sale recently where you can buy brown paper bags full of books of your choice for $5, so I have plenty of books to read next.

Between working full time, doctors appointments, surgeries, budgeting to become debt free, and still showing up for family functions, I have lost myself.

I am a planner and it throws me off when I do not have a plan or cannot follow a plan. I think this past year has been teaching me that life does not come with a manual and sometimes you just have to go with the flow.

This is such a hard lesson for me. I feel that I need structure, but I’m learning slowly that sometimes structure isn’t possible. I will be more grounded and boost my overall mental health if I take the time to relax. 30 minutes spent each day unwinding should allow me to be able to find myself.

  1. It’s in the silence that we learn what we need to learn. Sometimes it is very challenging because I know that I’ll have to deal with issues while other times I’m fighting to have that moment of silence so that I can keep my sanity. I’m sorry to hear all that you and yout husband are going through.

    1. Yes! Fighting the silence to keep my sanity. We will get through it though and be better adults because of our struggle. Thank you!

  2. My favorite way to spend “me” time has to be to put on some good music and craft something. The freedom of being able to take the project wherever I want along with some good jams always brings me peace.

    1. That’s a great idea! I forgot all about crafting. I will be sure to add that to my list. I have a few t-shirts that I would like to make. Thanks for the suggestion!
